Joe Philbin: We need to finish better in 2015

The Wembley-bound Miami Dolphins are putting an increased emphasis on finishing drives, halves and games during the 2015 season.

In an exclusive interview on Monday, head coach Joe Philbin told BritViewNFL:

“We have to perform better, execute better and coach better in critical situations when the game hangs in the balance. Our team understands there is a fine line between winning and losing in the NFL. That’s how it is in this league and it makes every play important.”

The Dolphins are working on ‘finishing’ both on offense and defense. And the plan is that such focus and work in that area will allow a talented Miami team to rack up more wins in 2015. Last season, the Dolphins had quality opponents such as the Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos right where they wanted them before suffering late game swoons and ending up on the losing end of the scoreline.

Philbin said:

“We’ve spent a lot of time on finishing and have spent more time on game-type situations, whether it be the kind of two-minute drives where we allowed Green Bay and Detroit to score and, conversely, we’ve spent more time on offense working to pick up first downs so we don’t put our defense in that situation.”

“Close games happen a lot in the NFL – it’s hard to predict how many are going to unfold like that but it’s safe to say there are going to be a number of games in 2015 that will be determined by how we play at the end of the first half and at the end of the game.”
